UK: CO2 emissions increased in 2012

UK's emissions increased by 4.5% in 2012, if compared to 2011 levels, in major part due to an increase of almost 31% of coal consumption in power stations. Coal prices have decreased considerably as the US has exported the coal it no longer needs at home, thanks to the shale gas boom.

UK: Offshore wind farms generated a record amount of electricity in 2012

UK renewable power generation hiked by 20% in 2012 due to the contribution of new offshore wind farms in spite of lower than average wind speeds over the year, according to figures released by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC).

UK’s Kingsnorth coal power plant closed today

The Kingsnorth coal plant in Kent has closed today, E.ON’s plant has stopped working already in December, but today it has officially closed. After forty years of producing electricity, the 2,000MW plant, has begun a two year decommissioning process which could lead to demolition.

Ireland reached new record level of wind output

According to the Irish Wind Energy Association, Ireland has currently reached a record level of wind power output of about 1,540 MW, corresponding to about 36% of the demand, which should be enough to power with electricity about 1 million households. The record was achieved at the same time as a new all-island record was also set for energy generation, with levels reaching 1,917MW on the island of Ireland, which should be enough to power more than 1,246,000 homes. The statistics also show that the average wind contribution on this day was almost 40% of system require.

ENEL looking for a stake in TAP

Italy's biggest power utility Enel is in talks to obtain a 20% stake in the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), project that aims to pump Azeri gas to Europe. Enel, necessitates more gas to fire part of its power generation fleet and to sell to consumers. Enel is developing a LNG terminal on the island of Sicily and has a stake in the GALSI project, which aims to transport Algerian gas into Italy
