Brent and U.S. crude oil futures fell on Wednesday after U.S. government data indicated that domestic crude inventories increased much more than forecasted. Brent crude futures slipped 55 cents at $111.06 per barrel, while front-month U.S. crude oil futures shed 39 cents on Wednesday.

UK: Gas prices hit 5 year highs

UK gas prices hit a five year high on Monday as unexpected stoppages at North Sea facilities sparked worries about the risk to power supplies. Within-day gas prices traded as high as 120 pence per therm, as the system was undersupplied by roughly 60 million cubic meters per day.

UK coal consumption increased 32.5% in 2012

According to the latest statistics released by the Department of Energy and Climate Change, consumption of coal in UK increased by 32.5% in 2012, reaching its highest level since 1996, while gas output fell by 33.8%, its lowest level since the same year. Coal power surpassed gas, becoming the biggest single source of UK electricity in 2012.
