European power trading volumes uncertain after the 2012 drop

Trading volumes in Europe's major wholesale power markets dropped 12% in 2012, and nearly four months into 2013 the direction of the market is too uncertain to predict. Trading volumes dropped to 8,534 TWh in 2012 in France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Britain and the Nordic region from 9,645 TWh in 2011, according to estimates.

Gazprom earnings for 2012 down 10%

Russian energy giant Gazprom, the world’s biggest natural gas producer, reported a 10% drop in its earnings amid lower gas sales. Profits for 2012 amounted to 38.17 billion dollars, compared to 42.2 billion dollars in 2011.

Daily: British wholesale gas near record high on cold snap, depleted storages

Brent and U.S. crude oil futures dropped on Thursday on Cyprus struggle to raise billions of euros to qualify for a bailout and to avoid bankruptcy, move that refreshed worries about the perspectives for petroleum demand in Europe. Brent crude for May delivery dropped $1.25, or 1.15 percent, to settle at $107.47 a barrel, having traded from $107.08 to $108.75. Meanwhile, U.S. May crude declined $1.05, or 1.12 percent, to settle at $92.45 a barrel, having traded from $91.84 to $93.53.

Daily: UK wholesale gas prices drop, but still high as the system eases

Brent crude oil futures for April delivery boosted $1.52 per barrel to settle at $111.61 on Tuesday, breaking a five-day losing strip, mainly prompted by North Sea supply disruptions, optimism over Chinese demand growth after the country targeted 7.5 percent GDP growth this year and a significant increase in U.S. equities.
